The Data Protection Act gives individuals the right to know what information is held about them. It provides a framework to ensure that personal information is handled properly.
The Act works in two ways. Firstly, it states that anyone who processes personal information must comply with eight principles, which make sure that personal information is:
-
Fairly and lawfully processed;
-
Processed for limited purposes;
-
Adequate, relevant and not excessive;
-
Accurate and up to date;
-
Not kept for longer than is necessary;
-
Processed in line with your rights;
-
Secure;
-
Not transferred to other countries without adequate protection.
The second area covered by the Act provides individuals with important rights, including the right to find out what personal information is held on computer and most paper records. You can get this by making what's called a 'subject access request'. If you want to find out about the data we hold about you can make a formal request using the Subject Access Request form available on the right. For more information on how to access your information please see the How to Access Your Information and Subject Access - A Guide for Data Subjects guides available to download on the right.

If you aren't happy with our response, you can make a complaint to the Information Commissioner's Office which oversees and enforces the Data Protection Act 1998 in the UK. You will need to show them that you have given us the opportunity to put things right before you make your complaint to them. Please see the link on the right for more information.
