Elder Abuse

Stop Elder Abuse with Aire Valley Homes Leeds

Action on Elder Abuse defines abuse as:

"a single or repeated act or lack of appropriate action occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person."

Elder abuse is more widespread than most people think, as it is often inflicted upon the most vulnerable and lonely people in society. Most older people who are abused, suffer in their own homes, but a quarter of the time, elder abuse happens in residential settings, including hospitals and care homes.

Abusers can attack people physically, psychologically, sexually, financially or by neglecting them. Sadly, this kind of abuse usually involves a betrayal of trust either by a family member or a care worker.

The abuse of older people is a very serious issue and in some cases can result in death. It is important that people are aware of elder abuse and prevent it from happening. Please download our easy to read leaflet on elder abuse from the link on the right. If you are a tenant of Aire Valley Homes Leeds we may be able to arrange for you and your friends to view a film on elder abuse created by Age Concern and Tony Robinson.
